It is remarkable (and very hopeful!) that someone of my age (64), severity of scoliosis, and degree of bone degeneration, can experience an improvement of curvature, using alternative therapies. My scoliosis began when I was 13, and has continued progressing throughout my life, especially when I was pregnant with my second child. I was never put into a brace or operated upon. At 38 years of age (1984), I considered spinal fusion and Harrington rod surgery, but opted for alternative treatments instead, including one year of Alexander technique and then many years of Iyengar yoga. From 2003-2008 I went to a chiropractor who gave me conventional adjustments. The X-ray to the right was taken in spring 2008, and shows an 81 degree right thoracic curve and an 81 degree left lumbar curve. I went to a chiropractor with some Pettibon training from spring to fall of 2008, during which my thoracic curve improved and my lumbar curve worsened. In fall 2008 I started with my current chiropractor, Dr. Scot Sorum, who is fully certified in the Pettibon and CLEAR Institute methods. So far with him, my lumbar curve has stabilized and improved slightly, and my thoracic curve has improved by 12 degrees from the 2008 measurements. It is remarkable (and very hopeful!) that someone of my age (64), severity of scoliosis, and degree of bone degeneration, can experience an improvement of curvature, using alternative therapies.
